5 Common Problems with Elevator Doors (and Fixes)

Elevator doors are among the parts most likely to experience problems, simply because they open and close countless times each day. To help, we’ve put together an overview of common door issues, along with practical inspection tips and troubleshooting solutions.

Main Components of an Elevator Door System

Before diving into the problems, it’s useful to know the two key parts that make up elevator doors:

Landing doors – the doors on each floor, through which passengers enter and exit.

Car doors – the doors mounted on the elevator car itself, which move in coordination with the car.

The opening and closing process is controlled by the car door operator. This mechanism drives the car doors, which then engage the landing door interlock so that both sets of doors open and close together.

Common Problems with Elevator Doors and How to Fix

1. Doors Won’t Close Properly

Causes:

  • Door Motor doesn’t have enough force or incorrect current settings
  • Belt on the door operator is loose or slipping
  • Door blade and landing door lock aren’t lined up
  • Debris or wear in the guide rails

Solutions:

  • Check the operator motor for sufficient drive force; adjust current or replace if needed
  • Tighten or replace the belt
  • Reposition the door blade so it catches the lock properly
  • Clean the guide rails, lubricate or replace if worn

2. Doors Move Slowly or Stick

Causes:

  • Rails are dirty or dry
  • Rollers or pulleys are worn or stuck
  • Incorrect inverter parameters in the door system

Solutions:

  • Clean and grease the rails (but don’t overdo the oil)
  • Check the pulley bearings and replace if damaged
  • Adjust inverter parameters to restore smooth door speed

3. Doors Keep Reopening or Won’t Stay Closed

Causes:

  • Light curtain or safety sensor is blocked or faulty
  • Door lock contacts are not working right
  • Door controller detecting abnormal resistance
  • Something stuck in the sill groove
  • Rollers are worn or damaged
  • Issues with the motor, belt, or transmission parts

Solutions:

  • Clean or replace the light curtain sensors
  • Inspect lock contacts for proper electrical connection
  • Test the door controller; adjust sensitivity or replace if needed
  • Clear out the sill groove (keep it clean regularly)
  • Replace rollers and adjust door guides (needs a trained tech)
  • Adjust belt tension or replace old belts; lubricate or replace worn parts

4. Unusual Noises During Operation

1) Clattering noise at full open/close
Causes:

  • Crooked installation of the upper sill
  • Misaligned or unevenly spaced landing door panels
  • Missing anti-collision rubber pads

Solution

  • Line up the sill, adjust panels, install pads.

2) “Clanging” sound when landing doors open/close
Causes:

  • Door hook lock not level
  • Gap between hook and lock box too tight
  • Gap between opener blade and lock wheel too wide
  • Doors opening/closing too fast

Solution:

  • Level the hook, set correct gaps (4–6 mm for opener blade), slow down initial opening and final closing speeds.

3) Shrill rubbing noise when doors close together
Cases:

  • Shrill rubbing noise when doors close together:
  • Door rubbing on threshold or frame
  • Rubber strip scraping threshold
  • Steel cable kinked and vibrating
  • Side pillar skewed, causing rubbing

Solution:

  • Re-align side pillar, adjust gaps, reposition or replace the strip, fix or change the cable.

5. Doors Don’t Open (People Stuck Inside)

Causes:

  • Floor door lock didn’t release
  • Car door opener is jammed
  • Control system didn’t send open signal

Solutions:

  • Check door lock (both mechanical and electrical)
  • Manually check car door opening device for obstructions
  • Inspect control cabinet for proper door-opening signal output

6. Door Vibration or Unstable Movement

Causes:

  • Misaligned door rails causing high resistance
  • Wrong parameter settings in operator
  • Uneven belt wear
  • Dust and dirt on rails
  • Trash or objects in sill groove

Solutions:

  • Re-align and adjust door rails
  • Reset door operator curve parameters
  • Replace or re-tension the belt
  • Clean rails (sand lightly and wipe down)
  • Clear sill groove of any debris

Conclusion

Common malfunctions in landing doors primarily involve door locks, door blades, and door tracks;
Common malfunctions in car doors primarily involve door operators, motors, belts, and control boards.
During routine maintenance, frequent cleaning and lubrication, door lock inspections, and light curtain checks can effectively prevent most malfunctions.
