Elevator Machine Room Safety Tips

As the building owner or the party responsible for elevator management, ensuring machine room safety requires attention to four key areas: access control, equipment protection, environmental conditions, and emergency preparedness. The following safety requirements should always be observed.

Table of Contents

Access Control

The machine room is intended solely for elevator equipment and must not be used for storage or any unrelated purpose.

Keep the machine room locked at all times, and ensure that keys are controlled by authorized personnel to prevent unauthorized access.

Passageways and Door Requirements

Keep all passageways leading to the machine room clear and free of obstructions.

Machine room doors should allow safe emergency exit, and warning signs such as “Danger – Authorized Personnel Only” should be clearly displayed on the outside of the door.

Electrical Safety

Provide permanent lighting in the machine room with a minimum illumination level of 200 lux in working areas.

Emergency lighting should also be installed in case of a power failure.

Conveniently located power outlets should be provided for maintenance work, and the lighting switch should be installed near the entrance.

Protection of Rotating Parts

Rotating components, including the traction sheave and governor sheave, should be fitted with appropriate protective guards wherever required to prevent accidental contact.

Protection for Openings and Floor Level Differences

Floor pits or trenches deeper than 0.5 m should be securely covered.

Where floor level differences exceed 0.5 m, provide steps or stairs with suitable handrails.

Any openings leading to the hoistway should be protected by a curb or frame at least 50 mm high to prevent tools or other objects from falling into the shaft.

Temperature and Humidity Control

Maintain the machine room temperature between 5°C and 40°C, with relative humidity not exceeding 85%.

The room should also be protected against rainwater, leaks, and excessive moisture.

Fire Safety and Rodent Control

Provide appropriate firefighting equipment, such as dry powder fire extinguishers, and inspect them regularly to ensure they remain serviceable.

Where necessary, install rodent control measures to prevent damage to electrical wiring and equipment.

Emergency Control Devices

Emergency control devices should be installed in a clearly visible and easily accessible location.

They should be clearly identified with yellow or red markings, and emergency operating procedures should be posted nearby.

Signage and Documentation

The machine room should display clear equipment identification, landing indicators, and direction-of-travel signs where multiple elevators are installed.

Electrical drawings, maintenance records, and other technical documentation should be kept complete and readily available.

Equipment Lifting Points

Suitable lifting points, such as lifting hooks installed on the ceiling or structural beams, should be provided for handling heavy equipment.

Their safe working load (SWL) should be clearly marked.

Final Inspection

Before an elevator is put into service, Dazen carries out a comprehensive inspection of the machine room against the above requirements. We also recommend establishing routine inspections and preventive maintenance records to help ensure long-term safe and reliable operation.
