What Is an Elevator Wire Rope?
Elevator wire ropes are the main load-bearing components, used to suspend the car and counterweight, and they bear nearly the entire weight of the elevator. They are made of multiple strands of high-strength steel wires twisted together, possess extremely high strength and toughness, making them critical safety components in traction elevators.
How Does a Wire Rope Elevator Work?
The elevator has a car and a counterweight, which are connected by wire ropes. The wire ropes are driven by the traction of the driving device (traction machine) so that the elevator car and the counterweight move up and down on the inner guide rails of the elevator.
Can Elevator Wire Ropes Break?
For elevators used for wire rope elevators, the country has special regulations and requirements. The configuration of the wire rope is not only to bear the building elevator and the rated load, but also to consider the size of the traction force. Therefore, the tensile strength of the steel wire rope is greatly greater than the load capacity of the elevator, and their safety factors are all above 12. The general elevators are with more than four wire ropes, so one elevator wire rope will not break.
What Happens If Power Fails?
If an unexpected power outage or failure of the power supply line occurs during the operation of the elevator, the elevator will automatically stop running, and there will be no danger. Because the elevator itself is equipped with electrical and mechanical safety devices, once the power is cut off, the actuator of the electric body will automatically brake so that the elevator cannot operate. In addition, if there is a planned power outage by the power supply department, the elevator will be stopped in advance if it is notified in advance.
How Long Do Elevator Wire Ropes Last?
There is no mandatory replacement schedule for elevator steel ropes. However, based on industry experience, it is recommended that standard elevators have their steel ropes replaced every 5 to 8 years, and high-speed elevators every 3 to 5 years. Even for well-maintained elevators, all steel ropes should be replaced after 10 years of service.
Why Must All Elevator Wire Ropes Be Replaced Together?
An elevator utilizes multiple steel ropes; when one of them becomes damaged, it implies that the others may also be compromised, as all the ropes were originally installed as a single batch. Furthermore, a critical reason for this practice is the difference in tension between new and old ropes. Replacing only a single rope would result in an uneven distribution of load across the system, which, in turn, leads to excessive wear on the traction sheave.
