Escalator skirt panels are installed along both sides of the moving steps, adjacent to the moving steps. They form the side boundary of the step band and help reduce the risk of passengers’ shoes, clothing, or other objects becoming trapped between the steps and the skirt panels.
The following are the specific details of the core standards:
Horizontal Clearance
The horizontal clearance between the steps and each skirt panel shall not exceed 4 mm. The sum of the clearances measured at corresponding positions on both sides shall not exceed 7 mm.
Vertical Clearance
For moving walks with skirt panels positioned above the tread surface, the vertical clearance between the tread and the lower edge of the skirt panel shall not exceed 4 mm.
Strength and Stiffness
Skirt panels shall have adequate strength and stiffness with smooth surface joints. At the thinnest section of the panel, when a vertical force of 1,500 N is applied over an area of 25 cm², the resulting deflection shall not exceed 4 mm, and no permanent deformation shall occur.
Skirt Brushes
Skirt brushes or other anti-entrapment devices may be installed along both sides of the skirt panels to reduce the likelihood of shoes or clothing being drawn into the step-to-skirt gap.
Skirt Panel Deformation Detection Device
Escalators shall be equipped with a skirt panel obstruction or deformation detection device. If a foreign object causes excessive deformation of the skirt panel, the device shall automatically stop the escalator.
Low-friction Coating
The skirt panel surface should be treated with a low-friction coating or other suitable friction-reducing material to minimize the risk of passenger entrapment.
These are the key technical and safety requirements for escalator and moving walk skirt panels. Compliance with these requirements helps ensure safe operation and reduces the risk of passenger entrapment.
