What Is an MRL Elevator
Traditional elevator systems require a machine room at the top of a building to install key components such as control cabinets and traction motors. However, in some projects where construction budgets and space are limited, it is not possible to allocate a machine room. In such cases, the components that would normally be housed in the machine room are integrated and compacted so they can be installed directly within the elevator shaft. This is known as a machine-room-less elevator, also called an MRL elevator.
Key Factors That Affect MRL Elevator Cost
Floors: For each additional floor, costs increase by approximately $500 to $2,000.
Load Capacity: Higher load capacity requires more advanced drive systems and structural configurations. Costs increase by $500 to $800.
Door Type: Center-opening car doors are the standard configuration. Side-opening car doors cost slightly more (approximately $200 additional).
Fire-rated doors or doors for special applications will also incur additional costs.
Car Interior Finishes: This is one of the biggest factors affecting pricing.
For example:
Standard stainless steel: Lower cost.
Mirrored, etched, or wood-grain panels: Higher cost.
Depending on the level of customization, finishing costs can range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars.
Control System: Different brands and configurations affect both performance and cost. The selection is usually based on project requirements.
How to Reduce MRL Elevator Cost
If you are working with a limited budget, there are several ways to keep costs under control:
✔ Choose a proven and reliable drive system
Currently, both mainstream traction and hydraulic technologies are highly mature; prioritizing standardized solutions can effectively reduce costs.
✔ Strictly Adhere to Standard Shaft Dimensions
Non-standard shaft dimensions require additional design work and structural modifications, which will result in a significant increase in costs.
✔ Simplify Cabin Interior Finishes
If your primary focus is on practicality, you can select standard stainless steel materials and minimize the use of high-end decorative elements—such as mirrored surfaces or wood-grain finishes.
This area is typically the easiest place to “save on the budget.”

FAQ
How much does it cost to install a 3-story residential MRL elevator?
For example, a residential mrl elevator with a capacity of 400 kg, serving 3 floors, featuring high-quality finishes, and operating at a speed of 0.4 m/s typically costs around $25,000 (including installation).
Are MRL elevators cheaper than MR elevators?
MRL elevators are more expensive and require higher technical standards.
Do MRL elevators require a machine room?
No. MRL elevators have all critical components installed directly inside the elevator shaft, eliminating the need for a separate machine room.
